Spacing widget

The Spacing widget adds an empty block between dashboard widgets, 16 px to 208 px high, with a transparent or colored background.

Written by Emma Montgomery

A Spacing widget is an empty block between widgets. Think of a blank row that gives a dashboard room to breathe. You pick its height from a list, and its background stays transparent or takes a color.

Here is the test: do two widgets sit too close together? If yes, add Spacing between them. For a visible line, use a Divider widget.

Example: on the Vendor risk overview a 48 px Spacing sits under the Hero, so the metrics row does not touch it.

Adding a Spacing widget

  1. Set the View | Edit switch in the upper right to Edit.

  2. Select + Add Widget in the toolbar. The Add New Widget sidebar opens on the right with a Search Widget box and thirteen collapsible categories. Page Display is open to start.

  3. Open Page Display and select the Spacing card. Its info icon reads "Adds a horizontal space between widgets".

  4. The widget lands on the dashboard at once, at full width. There is no modal.

Drag it by its handle to move it between two widgets.

The widget settings

The Spacing widget has no modal. Hover over it in Edit mode and a strip appears. It holds a drag handle, an up arrow and a down arrow. Then a circle-slash Background button, the height button reading 16px, a trash icon (Delete spacing) and the label "Spacing".

Height

The height button shows the current height, 16px to start. Select it for a list of thirteen heights, from 16 px to 208 px in 16 px steps. The list reads 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 144, 160, 176, 192 and 208.

Tip: Pick one height for every gap between sections and keep to it. The dashboard reads as one page instead of a stack of parts.

Background

The circle-slash button opens a color picker. It has a saturation square, a hue bar and a value box reading transparent with a copy icon. Under them sit a format list reading HEX, a Recently used row and SmartSuite Colors: transparent, then ten colors and ten grays. Transparent is the default. Pick a color and the block shows as a band.

Using the widget

In View mode a transparent Spacing is invisible: it is the gap itself. A colored one shows as a band. It takes the full row. A Filter widget and a Record Selector do not change it. It holds no records.

Note: The mobile app does not render the Spacing widget, so the gap closes on a phone. A layout that depends on Spacing looks tighter there.

Editing a Spacing widget

In Edit mode, hover over the widget and use its strip. The height button changes the height. The Background button changes the color. The arrows move it up or down. The trash removes it at once, with no confirmation. There is no Edit button and no More Options menu on this widget. See Manage widgets on a dashboard for the other widgets' controls.

Frequently asked questions

How tall can a Spacing widget be?

From 16 px to 208 px, in 16 px steps, from the height button on its strip.

Why is there no gap on my phone?

The mobile app does not show the Spacing widget. The widgets above and below it sit together.

Spacing or Divider: which one?

Spacing is an empty gap. A Divider is a visible line with an optional label. Use both when a section needs room and a rule.

Can I give the gap a color?

Yes. Select the circle-slash button on the strip and pick a color, or type a HEX value. Transparent is the default.
