Summary card widget

A Summary Card widget shows one number from a table, such as a sum, average or count, or a static value you type.

Written by Emma Montgomery

A Summary Card shows one number on a dashboard. Think of a tile that reads "14 open findings". The number is a count or another calculation over the records that pass a filter, or a fixed value you type.

Here is the test: is one number the answer? If yes, add a Summary Card. For a number against a goal, use a Progress Metric. For this period against the last, use a Comparison Metric.

Example: the Vendor risk overview has a row of three cards. Open findings counts the Findings records whose Status is not Resolved. Tier 1 vendors counts Vendors with Vendor Tier set to Tier 1. Controls in scope is a static value of 80. The Vendor Tier filter widget narrows the first two.

Three Summary Cards in a row on the Vendor risk overview: Open findings 14, Tier 1 vendors 6, Controls in scope 80.

Adding a Summary Card widget

  1. Set the View | Edit switch in the upper right to Edit.

  2. Select + Add Widget in the toolbar. The Add New Widget sidebar opens on the right with a Search Widget box and thirteen collapsible categories. Page Display is open to start.

  3. Open Metrics and select the Summary Card card. Its info icon reads "Shows a result of a simple calculation."

  4. The Summary Card modal opens. The preview sits on the left and the settings on the right, on two tabs, General and Style. Set the source and the value, then select Add Widget at the foot.

The widget lands on the dashboard at a quarter of the row width, with its title above the value. Drag it by its handle to move it.

The General tab

The General tab holds the Heading section and Value Type, which decides whether the Dynamic Value or the Static Value settings show.

Heading

Title is the widget's name, prefilled with "Summary Card". Description is a switch, off to start; on, it adds a text box and the choice As A Tooltip or Below The Title.

Value Type

Dynamic Value calculates the number from records and is chosen to start. Static Value shows a number you type.

Dynamic Value

Source is a button that shows the table's name with the caption "Solution: <name>". It opens a two-level picker: the tables of the current solution, and behind a back chevron every solution you can see, with a search box. For Open findings it is Vendor Management and Findings.

Metric Value is a field and a calculation. The field list offers the title field and the number-like fields: Number, Currency and Open Comments. With the title field the calculation is Count. With a number field it reads Sum to start, and the list holds Sum, Avg, Min, Max, Median, Stdev, Empty, Filled, Percent Empty and Percent Filled. A Currency field keeps its format, so a sum of costs reads as money. Open findings uses the title field with Count.

Filter opens the same Filter panel as a saved view. Open findings uses Status is not Resolved.

Tip: One filter per card, not one card per filter. Let a Filter widget on the dashboard do the slicing, so one Open findings card answers for every vendor tier.

Static Value

A number box, prefilled with 123, with the placeholder "Write here". Controls in scope is static: the Security lead types 80.

The General tab with Dynamic Value chosen, the Source set to Findings and Metric Value open.

The Style tab

Two sections, Value and Style.

Value

Alignment is two icons, left and center; center is chosen to start. Size is S, M or L, M to start.

Style

Appearance is Classic or Modern; Modern is chosen to start. With Modern, a Background Color row offers twenty swatches, ten strong and ten washed, blue to start. With Classic the card is white and the row becomes Text Color, with ten swatches.

Permissions

Solution Managers and members with Full Access add and change widgets on a public dashboard. The owner does so on a private one. Every member who can open the dashboard sees the card. See Dashboard Settings. A shared read-only page shows it too; see Public Dashboard Sharing.

Note: The number is counted for the person looking at it. A member who cannot see some findings gets a smaller count on the same card.

Using the widget

In View mode the card shows its number large under its title. Select the card and a window titled with the widget's name opens, listing the records behind the number in a grid with the view toolbar and an Export button. See Edit records in a drill-in grid.

A Filter widget on the same tab narrows the card to the records that pass its conditions. A Record Selector narrows a connected card to the chosen record.

Editing a Summary Card widget

In Edit mode, hover over the widget and select Edit in the strip that appears above it. The modal reopens; change the source, the value, the filter or the style, then select Save Changes at the foot. Cancel after a change asks "Are you sure you want to exit without saving the changes you made?", with Exit Without Saving and Save Changes. The strip's More Options menu holds Minimize, Highlight Color, Duplicate Widget, Delete Widget and Collapsed by Default; see Managing Widgets.

Frequently asked questions

Can one Summary Card control other Summary Cards?

Not directly. Use a Record Selector widget as the control. Connect each card to it, and all of them update when the viewer picks a record.

Can I filter a Summary Card from another widget?

Yes. A Filter widget on the same tab applies its conditions to every connected widget from the same table. A Record Selector filters connected cards to the chosen record.

How is a Summary Card different from a Comparison Metric?

A Summary Card shows one number. A Comparison Metric shows this period's number and the change against the last.

Which calculations can a card show?

Count on the title field. On a number field: Sum, Avg, Min, Max, Median, Stdev, Empty, Filled, Percent Empty and Percent Filled.

Can I show the number as currency?

Yes. Pick a Currency field and the card keeps its format; a sum of three costs read $600.00 in the read.
