The footer under a Grid view shows a summary for any column: a count, a sum, an average, a date range. With grouping on, every group gets its own footer.
Here is the test: do you want one number about the whole column, without a formula? Use the footer. For a number on each record, use a Formula or Rollup field.
Example: in the Vendor risk register, the footer under Annual Contract Value shows the Sum. Grouped by Vendor Tier, each tier gets its own sum. Under Control Owner, Percent Filled shows the share of vendors with a named owner.
The register's footer with 42 vendors at the left, Sum under Annual Contract Value and Percent Filled under Control Owner.

Opening the Summary menu
The footer row sits under the last record. At its left is the record count, such as "42 vendors". Under every column is a cell that reads Summary. Select it and a list opens upward from the cell. Pick a summary and it shows in the cell in place of the word Summary.
The Summary menu open under Annual Contract Value, listing None through Range.
The summaries by field type
The list depends on the column's field type. The lists below are in the product's order.
Every field
None, Empty, Filled, Percent Filled, Percent Empty. This is the whole list on Title, Text, Text Area, Single Select, Status, Assigned To, Linked Record, Checklist, Multiple Select, Tag, Lookup, Yes / No and Auto Number columns. Empty and Filled count the records with no value or a value; the two percentages show the same as a share of the records.
Tip: Percent Filled is a quick coverage number for an audit. Under Control Owner it tells you what share of vendors has a named owner, with no formula.
Number, Currency and Percent
None, Empty, Filled, Percent Filled, Percent Empty, Sum, Lowest, Highest, Average, Median, Standard Deviation, Range. Range shows the lowest to the highest value.
Time Tracking Log
None, Empty, Filled, Percent Filled, Percent Empty, Sum, Lowest, Highest, Average, Range. There is no Median or Standard Deviation on this field.
Date and Due Date
None, Empty, Filled, Percent Filled, Percent Empty, Earliest Date, Latest Date, Date Range. On Contracts, Earliest Date under Renewal Date shows the next renewal in the view.
Files and Images
None, Empty, Filled, Percent Filled, Percent Empty, Total Number of Attachments, Total Attachment Size.
Footers under groups
Group the view and a footer with the same Summary cells sits under each group, above the view's own footer. Pick Sum under Annual Contract Value and each Vendor Tier group shows its own sum, with the total for the view at the bottom.
Note: The footer summarizes the records the view shows. Filter the view and the totals follow the filter.

Permissions
Any member who can open the view can pick a summary. Whether it is kept depends on the view. On a public view the product's note reads "Members with full access and above can edit and save changes to this view". On a private view it reads "Only you can edit and save changes to this view". With Autosave changes checked in the view menu, which is the default, the summary saves to the view at once. See View Panel. A locked view keeps its saved footer; see Locked Views.
Using totals in each view type
The footer belongs to the Grid view. The other view types lay records out as cards, bars, pins or charts, with no footer row; for a chart that totals a field, see Chart View. On a dashboard, see Dashboards: Grid View Widget.
Changing or clearing a total later
Select the footer cell again and pick another summary. Select None to clear it, and the cell reads Summary again.
