AI Control Center, under Workspace Administration, is where a Workspace Administrator turns AI features on, adds and scopes provider connections, allows Internet Search and sets what connected assistants may do through MCP Access. Members see AI only where an Administrator has enabled it: an agent's connection list shows only the connections enabled for that feature and that solution.
Plan Availability | Workspace Administration is on every plan. The AI features it enables are listed on the Team, Professional and Enterprise cards of the pricing page; MCP Access is on every plan. |
Permissions | Workspace Administrators only. The Workspace Administration item in the profile menu appears for Administrators. |
Platform | Web. |

Where is AI Control Center?
Click your profile icon in the upper-right corner and select Workspace Administration.
Open AI Control Center. It holds the AI Field Agents settings, Providers and Models, and MCP Access.
How do I turn AI Field Agents on or off?
In AI Control Center, open AI Field Agents.
Turn Enable AI Field Agents on or off. A confirmation message asks you to confirm when turning it off.
Optional: turn on Internet Search support so agents may add web context. It is off by default.
Read Free AI requests remaining for the SmartSuite Trial connection.
Important: turning the feature off deactivates every agent in the workspace and returns the fields to standard behavior. The configurations are preserved and come back when you turn it on again.
How do I add a provider connection?
Connections live in Providers and Models. Each one bundles a provider, a model and an API key, and can be reused by every AI feature and solution you allow.
In AI Control Center, open Providers and Models and click to add a connection.
Select the provider and the model. The picker is the same curated list used in automations.
Paste your API key. AI Workflow Agent: Connecting Your Provider shows where each provider issues one.
Name the connection, for example Risk Assessment, and add an optional description.
Choose whether to enable Internet access. If the model does not support browsing, the option turns off by itself.
Click Test. SmartSuite sends a test prompt and shows the result; a healthy connection turns the button into Next.
Choose where the connection can be used: all solutions, or selected solutions only.
Enable the features for this connection: AI Workflow Agent, AI Field Agent or both.
Click Add Connection.
API keys are encrypted at rest and visible only to Workspace Administrators. The SmartSuite Trial connection (100 free requests, no key) is in the list from the start; you cannot edit it, but you can disable or delete it. Removing any connection shows a warning if automations will be affected.
How do I limit where a connection is used?
Edit the connection and change its solutions and its features. A Member setting up an AI Workflow Agent or an AI Field Agent sees only the connections enabled for that feature in that solution. The scope on the connection decides who can use which model and key.
How do I control what AI assistants can do through MCP?
In AI Control Center, open MCP Access and click Edit.
Choose Disabled, Read-Only (the default) or Read & Write.
Click Save Configuration.
Option. | What it allows. |
Disabled. | No MCP access. The workspace does not appear in the list when a Member connects an assistant. |
Read-Only. | Assistants can read anything the connected Member can see, and change nothing. |
Read & Write. | Assistants act as the connected Member and can change records and structure (fields, tables, views, forms and automations), within that Member's own permissions. |
Each Member also chooses read only or read & write when they connect, and the stricter of the two wins. Lowering the setting narrows every existing connection within about a minute; raising it does not upgrade existing connections, so a Member who wants write access reconnects and chooses it. A common setup is Read & Write on build and sandbox workspaces and Read-Only on production workspaces.
How do I see AI usage?
Free AI requests remaining under AI Field Agents shows what is left of the 100 trial requests.
Each connection has a usage and activity log: Used In shows where the connection is live, and Activity History lists every API call with the feature, solution, date and execution result. Activity History records are kept for three years.
In a record's activity history, a value written by a Field Agent shows Updated by AI, and a change made through an assistant carries both the Member's name and the assistant's.
What do Members see when AI is off?
AI Field Agents off: every agent is deactivated and the fields behave as standard fields. Agents that run while the feature is off show AI Agent Failed.
A connection disabled or removed: it no longer appears in any agent's connection list, and automations that used it were warned about at removal.
MCP Access Disabled: the workspace does not appear when a Member connects an assistant, and existing connections lose access within about a minute.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit or remove the SmartSuite Trial connection?
Can I edit or remove the SmartSuite Trial connection?
You cannot edit it. You can disable or delete it at any time, and the 100 free requests are not replaced; after them, agents run on connections with your own provider key.
Who can see an API key after it is added?
Who can see an API key after it is added?
Only Workspace Administrators. Keys are encrypted at rest, and Members see connection names, not keys, when they pick one in an agent.
Does one connection serve both the AI Workflow Agent and AI Field Agents?
Does one connection serve both the AI Workflow Agent and AI Field Agents?
Yes, when both features are enabled on the connection. You can also enable only one, so a key used for automations is not available in fields.
What happens to automations when I remove a connection?
What happens to automations when I remove a connection?
SmartSuite warns you at removal if automations use the connection. Those AI Workflow Agent actions need another connection before they run again.
