Hover over a row in a Grid view and press the space bar. The record opens. No click, no expand icon.

Here is the test: are you reading record after record? The space bar is the fastest way through them.

Opening a record with the space bar

Open the table in a Grid view, with no cell selected.
Move the pointer over the row of the record. The row number turns into a checkbox and the row shows its controls.
Press the space bar. The record opens in the record window.

The record window shows the table name, the record number, the title, the fields in sections, and < and > arrows at the sides for the previous and next record. At the bottom are Cancel and Save. Press Escape to close it when nothing has changed, or Shift + Cmd + S (Shift + Ctrl + S on Windows) to save and close.

Note: With a cell selected, the space bar opens that cell's record, not the row under the pointer, and puts the caret in that field. Press Escape to clear the selection first if you want the hovered row.

Other ways to open a record from the grid

Hover over a row and select the Expand Row icon that appears in place of the row number.
Right-click a cell and select Open Finding; the item carries the table's record name. See Right-Click Actions within Grid View.

Tip: Inside the open record, Cmd + R (Ctrl + R on Windows) saves it and opens the next record in the view. A long review never has to go back to the grid.

Permissions

Every member who can open the view can open its records this way. What the member can change inside the record follows the record's permissions; see Table Permissions.

Using the space bar in each view type

The space bar shortcut belongs to the Grid view, where records are rows. In the other view types, select a card, bar or pin to open the record; each type's article says how.

Frequently asked questions

A different record opened. Why?

A cell was selected, and the selected cell wins over the hovered row. Press Escape, hover over the row you want, and press the space bar again.

How do I move to the next record without closing the window?

Use the arrows at the sides of the record window, or Cmd + R (Ctrl + R) to save and open the next record.

Does this work with Disable Inline Edit on?

The record still opens from the Expand Row icon and the right-click menu on such a view. See Disable Inline Edit.

Does the space bar work in Card or Kanban views?

The shortcut belongs to the Grid view. In Card and Kanban, select the card to open the record.
