Delete View removes a saved view and its settings from the table. The records stay where they are; only the layout goes. A deleted view cannot be restored.

Here is the test: does nobody open this view any more, and does no link or widget depend on it? If yes, delete it. If someone still needs part of it, duplicate it first, or make it private instead.

Example: a Vendor Management solution with a Vendors table. The Security lead built a public grid called Q1 review for a review that is over. The one filter Finance still used now lives in Finance's Spend by vendor view, so the Security lead deletes Q1 review.

Opening Delete View

Select the chevron next to the view name above the toolbar, or hover over the view in the View Panel and select its ... menu. Both open the same view menu.
The menu lists Rename View, Add Description, Duplicate View, Change View Type, Public View, Delete View and the Autosave changes checkbox. Select Delete View. On a Form view the item reads Delete Form.

Delete View is grayed out in two cases: on the last public view of a table, and on a locked view. A table always keeps at least one public view, and a locked view must be unlocked first.

The confirmation prompt

A prompt headed Are you sure? opens. Its text names the view: Are you sure that you want to delete the "Q1 review" view? Two buttons: No, cancel keeps the view, Yes, delete view removes it.

After you confirm, SmartSuite opens another view of the table. In the product read it opened the first view in the first folder. No message with an Undo button appears.

What is deleted and what is not

The records are not touched. Every view of a table shows the same records, so deleting one view changes nothing in the others.

What goes is the view itself: its name, description, fields to display, sort, filter, groups, spotlights and row size. The Recycle Bin, in the three-dot menu next to the New button, holds deleted fields, records and tables. It has no Views tab, so a deleted view is not in it.

Note: A deleted view cannot be restored. Duplicate it first if you may need it again, or make it private instead.

Permissions

Who deletes which view. Solution Managers delete any public view. Full Access members delete the public views they created. Every member deletes their own private views. See View Panel: create, organize and lock views.

Locked views. A locked view cannot be deleted until a Solution Manager, an Account Administrator or the view's creator turns Lock View off. See Locked Views.

The last public view. The last public view of a table cannot be deleted; the item is grayed out. Create another public view first.

Using it with care

Before deleting a view the team has used, check three things. Does a shared link point at it? Open Share View and look at the switch. Does a dashboard widget read from it? Open the widget's settings. Does anyone still rely on one of its filters? Ask, or duplicate the view and keep the copy private. For the Q1 review grid, the Security lead moved the one filter Finance used, then deleted.

Tip: When only you still use a view, make it private instead of deleting it. Open the view menu, hover over Public View and select Private View. The panel gets shorter for everyone else, and you keep the view.

Frequently asked questions

Can I restore a deleted view?

No. The Recycle Bin holds fields, records and tables, not views. Duplicate a view before deleting it if you may want it back.

Can I delete a locked view?

No. Delete View is grayed out while the view is locked. Turn Lock View off first, from Public View in the view menu.

Why is Delete View grayed out on an unlocked view?

It is the last public view of the table. A table keeps at least one public view. Create another public view, then delete this one.

Which view opens after I delete one?

Another view of the same table. In the product read it was the first view in the first folder.

Does deleting a view delete records?
