Duplicate View makes a new saved view with the same settings as the original: fields, sort, filter, groups and spotlights. You name the copy, choose whether it is public or private, and pick a folder.
Here is the test: do you want your own variant of a view the team uses, without changing theirs? If yes, duplicate it. Duplicate View also works on a locked view, so you can try a change the lock would block.
Example: a Vendor Management solution with a Vendors table. The public Vendor risk register is locked. A Finance member duplicates it as a private view called Spend by vendor, trims Fields to Display to four fields and sorts it by Annual Contract Value. The register is unchanged.
The Duplicate View dialog with the source card Vendor risk register, the arrow, the copy named Spend by vendor, Private selected and the folder dropdown reading No folder.

Opening Duplicate View
Select the chevron next to the view name above the toolbar, or hover over the view in the View Panel and select its ... menu.
The menu lists Rename View, Add Description, Duplicate View, Change View Type, Public View, Delete View and the Autosave changes checkbox. Select Duplicate View. On a Form view the item reads Duplicate Form.
On a locked view, Rename View, Add Description and Delete View are grayed out, and Duplicate View stays available.
The Duplicate View dialog
The dialog is headed Duplicate View, with an x at the top right. It shows a card for the original, with its type icon and name, an arrow, and a card for the copy.
NAME
The box is prefilled with the original's name plus "Copy", so the register's copy starts as Vendor risk register Copy. The placeholder under it reads Enter name... Type the name you want. The Finance member types Spend by vendor.
Public or Private
Two choices side by side, Public selected to start for Full Access members and Solution Managers. Private makes the copy yours alone. Members below Full Access get a private copy. The Finance member picks Private.
Choose a folder
A dropdown labeled Choose a folder where you'd like to place the View reads No folder and lists every folder of the table. It appears whether or not the original sits in a folder.
Duplicate View
Select Duplicate View. The copy opens with the original's settings and takes its place in the View Panel. A public copy sits with the public views, or in the folder you chose. A private copy sits under My Private Views.
If you select Cancel after changing the name, SmartSuite asks Are you sure?. The line under it reads "Are you sure you want to exit without saving the changes you made?". The buttons are Exit without Saving and Save Changes. Exit without Saving closes the dialog and makes no copy.
The Are you sure? prompt over the Duplicate View dialog, with Exit without Saving and Save Changes.
What is copied
Fields to display, sorting, filters and filter groups, grouping, spotlights and row or card size: everything the view saves. Find text is not part of a view and is not copied.
Note: The copy is a separate view. A change to the original does not reach the copy, and a change to the copy does not reach the original. When the register gains a column, Spend by vendor does not.
Permissions
Who duplicates. Any member who can open a view can duplicate it. Full Access members and Solution Managers choose Public or Private for the copy; other members get a private copy. See View Panel: create, organize and lock views.
Locked views. A lock protects the original's settings, not the dialog. Duplicate View stays available on a locked view. See Locked Views.
Using the copy
Open the copy and change it as you would any view: trim Fields to Display, change the Filter, add a Sort. Rename it from the view menu if the prefilled name stayed. When a private copy turns out to be useful to the team, hover over Public View in the view menu and select Public View.
Tip: When a team view is locked and you want to try a filter, duplicate it as a private view and experiment there. Nobody needs to lift the lock, and the team's view stays as it was.
