Sort puts the records of a view in order by one or more fields. The first sort decides the order; the next one breaks ties.
Here is the test: do you want the same records in a different order? Sort. Do you want headings between them? Group instead.
Example: a Vendor Management solution with a Vendors table. The Vendor risk register sorts by Inherent Risk Score 9 → 1, so the riskiest vendors come first, then by Vendor Name A → Z to settle ties. On the Findings board, cards sort by Due Date 1 → 9 inside each column.
The Sort By panel with two rows: Inherent Risk Score 9 → 1 above Vendor Name A → Z.

Opening Sort
Sort is the second control in the toolbar. Select it and a panel titled Sort By opens under the button, with a Need help link. The panel opens with one sort row already in it, preset to the primary field. Under the rows sits + Add Sort; the footer holds Clear All and a blue Done.
The view sorts the moment a row changes, and the button's badge counts the rows: Sort 1, Sort 2 and so on. Done closes the panel. Clear All removes every row, clears the badge and closes the panel.
A sort: field and direction
Each row has a drag handle at the left, a field dropdown, a two-button direction toggle and a trash icon. Pick the field, then the direction. The first button is the default. The labels follow the field type.
A → Z | Z → A: title, Text, Text Area, Formula with a text result, Lookup of a text field, Assigned To, Linked Record, Files and Images.
1 → 9 | 9 → 1: Number, Currency, Percent, Auto Number, Count, Date, Due Date, First Created, Last Updated, Checklist, Time Tracking Log.
First → Last | Last → First: Single Select, Multiple Select, Status, Tag. The order is the order of the field's choices, not alphabetical.
Yes / No: the two buttons carry icons rather than words.
A Dependency field is not offered in the picker. For the register, the first row is Inherent Risk Score 9 → 1.
Tip: To order records by month, sort by a Date field rather than a text field of month names. A Date field sorts in calendar order; text sorts A to Z.
The direction toggle on a Status field, reading First → Last and Last → First.
Several sorts
Select + Add Sort to add a row. Each new row is preset to the next unused field in the picker's order; change it to the field you want. Rows apply from top to bottom: the top row orders the records and each row below breaks the ties left by the one above. Drag a row's handle to change its priority; the handle is disabled while there is one row. Select the trash to remove a row.
In the product read, Add Sort kept adding rows until every sortable field had one, 27 rows on a 28-field table, with no message.
The Sort By panel with three rows and + Add Sort beneath them.
Sorting from a column header
In a Grid view, the column menu holds the two sort items for that column. A text column reads Sort A → Z and Sort Z → A. A select or status column reads Sort First → Last and Sort Last → First. Selecting one adds the sort to the panel.
Permissions
Any member with access to a view can change its sort and see the result. Full Access members and Solution Managers save a sort on a public view; with Autosave changes on it is saved as it is made. Every member saves sorts on their own private views. On a locked view the change lasts for your session only, and the view returns to its saved sort the next time it opens. See View Panel: create, organize and lock views and Locked Views.
Using Sort in each view type
Grid: the rows reorder, and the column menu sorts by that column.
Card and Kanban: cards are ordered inside their columns.
Calendar, Timeline and Map: the Record Listing panel is reordered; the layout stays as it is.
Gantt: the task rows are reordered by the sort field.
Chart, Form, Dashboard and Document: no Sort control.
The Grid line comes from the read; the other lines carry what the view type articles state.
Changing the order later
Open Sort and change a field or a direction; the view updates at once. To put records in an order of your own, remove every sort and drag records by their handle in a Grid, Card or Kanban view. The live article states that this order is saved with the view.
Note: Drag ordering is off while any sort is on. Select Clear All in the Sort panel first.
